Benjamin and Brown bring Plainfield to the big screen

June 4, 2012

Plainfield, New Jersey– In an exclusive interview granted to Mark Spivey of the Courier News last week,  critically acclaimed film director Alrick Brown announced that he is collaborating with Plainfield based author and publisher JM Benjamin.  Adapting one of the author’s most insightful works, My Manz and ‘Em into a motion picture to be shot on location in the Queen City later this year.

“This is a story about redemption as much as it is a story about choices”, Benjamin said of his award winning novel turned movie.  “Its also about Plainfield and how we want to show the struggle that everyone can relate to.”    Without spoiling the plot, the story centers around a young man from Plainfield who makes some poor choices and ends up incarcerated.  During years of solitary and through the development of some relationships, he undergoes a spiritual transformation, only to be released back into the same circumstances, torn between family and the streets and forced to make new set of choices.

For Brown, this will be his second feature film and My Manz and ‘Em is a personal quest.  ” I turned down larger projects that would have paid me a lot, but this one had to be told.  I had to make sure this story got told.” Brown’s first film Kinyarwanda, won the Audience Choice Award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and is currently available on DVD and Video on Demand.

The powerhouse pair intend on making this film with the community in mind and have vowed to include many in the process.  ” We look at this project as a vehicle- as a way to help the community by using local vendors and providing young people with opportunities.” said Benjamin.  ” Yeah the excitement of seeing a major film production in the neighborhood will have an impact on young and old alike. We want to create a buzz. Get some pride going.” Brown said.

Author JM Benjamin and Film Director Alrick Brown join forces to breath life into “Manz and Em” a novel by Benjamin. Principle photography scheduled to begin Fall 2012 in Plainfield , NJ the home town of both men.two also mentioned using student interns as a way to engage community involvement.  ” We can tell this story here and give an opportunity to young people make different choices” Brown also said.

The two also mentioned using student interns as a way to engage community involvement.  ” We can tell this story here and give an opportunity to young people to make different choices” Brown also said.

Both the Director and the Author are working on various angles to achieve the total amount needed to fund the project. Their confidence is attached to the fact that budget will still come in under a million dollars.  ” We know that we can make a high quality movie for less than Hollywood blockbusters.  We are going with a wide release concept not just another straight to DVD project.”  JM’s books continue to sell and his growing legion of fans are eager to see the author take his Tyler Perry ascension to the Pearly Gates of Filmdom.

Set to star Jaimie Hector of HBO’s the Wire, My Manz and ‘Em is already being talked about in film as well as literary circles around the world.  Scheduled to start production in fall of 2012, the film making duo are  setting for a theatrical release in the Summer of 2013.

PCTV reports Hurricane Irene with YouTube Video Pods

PLAINFIELD-

With all of the excitement surrounding the Earthquake that rocked Virginia and sent tremors as far as Martha’s Vineyard,  it has been  a week wrought with natural calamities.   The Class 2 Hurricane that quickly downgraded to a Tropical Storm once it touched American soil, caused millions of dollars in damage across New Jersey.

As the storm finally reached our area, the steady rain and somewhat heavy winds  did not reveal the true nature of the impact of the event in our area.  After the storm subsided, Lamar David Mackson, Chairman of the Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board, armed himself with equipment borrowed from the Department of Media to follow the path of Hurricane Irene.

Inevitably what he found was an array of downed trees, flooded streets, faulty power lines and people out gawking at the destruction left in the hurricane’s path. Normally the raw footage would be delivered to the studio first for editing then uploaded for broadcasting on PCTV Comcast 96/Verizon34.   “The decision to go to YouTube with this was a no brainer” said Mackson.  “We live in a world which has embraced local journalists and the technology allows us to tell a story to the world instantly.”

Since being uploaded two days ago the video has received over 600 views and continues to climb.  “Television is no longer confined to the box that sits in your den at home, though it can be your laptop, desktop, smartphone, tablet or even ipod.  We live in a mobile and wireless society and the technology that allowed me to show the aftermath  of the hurricane to the world will continue to improve and eventually overtake traditional forms of media broadcast,” Mackson said.

The posted video to is his report can be found by clicking here.

SUNDANCE INTERNS GAIN VALUABLE LIFE EXPERIENCES

By Lamar David Mackson

PLAINFIELD- 4 Plainfield Public School District students were chosen for a remarkable trip to attend the Sundance Film Festival this past month.  The purpose for the trip was to shoot documentary footage of PHS alum and award winning film maker Alrick Brown as he released his first feature Kinyarwanda.

PCTV Student intern Chanelle Sears interviews Alrick Brown before the World Premiere of Kinyarwanda during the 2011 Sundance Fim Festival in Park City,Utah

The underlying reason ,however, is a bit more complex than that.  In recent months, the city of Plainfield has been plagued with a series of shootings and violence involving teens.  Community concern and proactive response, created the concept of the Student Interns traveling to Park City Utah to participate in an eye-opening experience.  For more info on ” From Plainfield to Sundance” click here .

” The Students were a big hit with everyone!” said  Brown. “We were all so impressed with their professionalism and ability to get it done.  I am sure these experiences will have a lifetime impact on them.”  Brown added.

From random interviews and news gathering on the Streets of Park City to the exclusivity of the red carpet and invite only receptions, the students where flooded with stimulus.  Recounting a chance meeting with superstar actor Blair Underwood, intern Chanelle Sears said, ” I just wanted a picture with him ….but then I remembered why we’re here and we set up an interview instead.” Over the course of the 4 day trip the students interviewed Harry Belafonte, Erica Ringor, Richard Schiff, Blair Underwood and many others.

Funded from private sources with logistical support from Plainfield Public Schools, the Plainfield Area YMCA ,the City of Plainfield and the City Council- From Plainfield to Sundance was a true exercise in proactive community response to recent circumstances.  “Getting these kids out of the city to participate in something that only a few people get to do is tremendous.  I can guarantee that we will see great things from these students and maybe one day we will follow one of their journeys.”  said Brown, whose film  won the equivalent of an Oscar at the annual film festival in Utah.

The Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board , which orchestrated the entire trip is looking forward to creating more opportunities for students and families to excel.  According to a spokesperson, “This is just the tip of the iceberg.  The Board is very committed to a focused effort on partnership and mentorship with the City’s youth.  If  we can impact one students life then we have chipped away at the problem surrounding young people.”

PLAINFIELD FILM MAKER WINS BIG WITH SUNDANCE AUDIENCES

BY LAMAR DAVID MACKSON

PARK CITY  ,UT- With continued momentum, Alrick Brown and his movie Kinyarwanda, are continuing to prove that tremendous possibilities can manifest.  On Friday the Sundance Institute announced that Kinyarwanda won the World Cinema Audience Award: Dramatic at this years Sundance Film Festival.

Plainfield New Jersey Native and Film Maker, Alrick Brown makes speech after winning Audience Choice Award

Annually held in Park City, Utah  the last two weekends of January, the festival started in Salt Lake City in 1978.   Thanks to the involvement of honorary chairman Robert Redford, the Festival is now one of the most important stages for indie filmmakers.

Brown, who graduated from Plainfield High School with degrees from Rutgers University and NYU, graciously accepted the award on behalf of his crew.  “This film wasn’t about the hype. It wasn’t about the money. It wasn’t about anything else but reaching people and changing them…” stated Brown with deep emotion and sincerity.

The film, which premiered January 24  at the Egyptian Theater in Park City Utah, sold out all six of its screenings before the festival began.  The film  buzzed on the streets and was well positioned with posters and specially designed caps and t-shirts.  Street teams vigorously distributed postcards while successfully capturing the attention of the  Sundance audience.  Social media such as Facebook and Twitter also helped to catapult this beautifully told story into the psyche of Sundance.

The Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board Congratulates Alrick Brown and the Cast and Crew of Kinyarwanda.  Continued Success and Thank You for sharing this with the City of Plainfield New Jersey!

From Plainfield to Sundance: Students chosen to document remarkable journey of local film maker during Sundance Film Festival

By Staff Writer

(Editors note-  At the release of this story, two shootings overnight Saturday of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend- one of them the second homicide of 2011 in as many weeks.A 16-year-old male was shot multiple times on John Street just after midnight. He was pronounced dead at RWJ Medical Center after being transported there. This follows the shooting of another male on Berckman Street in the East End around 9:30 PM Saturday evening.)

PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY- When the announcement that local film maker and director, Alrick Brown’s first feature film, Kinyarwanda, had been selected as an Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival this past December, the City of Plainfield was reeling from a series of shootings and deaths involving teenagers.  Public concern surrounding the violent incidents led to larger discussions regarding the creation of activities and programs that could be implemented to assist in decreasing the rash of local violence and provide our young citizens with constructive outlets to channel their energy.

Simultaneously, the Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board, a citizen-led committee responsible for Public Access Television development and regulation, began the rollout of their Student Internship and Producer Certification Programs.  Aimed at providing young people with alternatives to the pitfalls of street life, the programs are designed to tap into the creative interests of students by exposing them to the various aspects of television and film production.  The potential of the program was realized when the Board enlisted the manpower of several district students to film a series of Budget Deliberation Hearings hosted by the City Council in November.

Seeking out ways to share the experience of the Sundance Film Festival with his community, Brown, a graduate of Plainfield High School met with current Chairman of the Board, Lamar David Mackson to present the good news and share his vision for involving his beloved city in this once-in-a-lifetime experience provided at the Sundance Film Festival.  Dubbing the idea “From Plainfield to Sundance”, Brown believed that the best way to reach our young citizens was through active mentorship and practical experiential learning opportunities.  Brown and Mackson both agreed that by reaching out to the next generation of talent, countless lives could be changed for the better.

Armed with an outline of the plan, the two began meeting with public officials to solicit the support and approval to realize this innovative concept.   Starting with the Mayor of Plainfield and the Department of Media and working their way to the Plainfield Board of Education, Mackson and Brown presented the compelling proposal as a proactive measure to reach a multitude of misguided youth.  The basic premise of the plan was to select candidates from the Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board Student Internship Program to accompany Mr. Brown and his crew as they travel to Park City, Utah to promote the film Kinyarwanda.

The goal would be to capture one-on-one interviews, premiere night activities, and documentation of the fabled journey of an independent film as it makes its debut on the world stage.  The footage compiled would then be assembled into a documentary about the trip, Alrick Brown as a director and Plainfield native and the Sundance Film Festival environment, all of which would then be aired on local access channel Plainfield Cable TV Comcast 96/ Verizon 34.

Students would then be challenged to present the material in a general assembly to share their experiences with their schoolmates and families. Finally, the documentary would then serve as a curriculum component for the launch of a proposed Television Production program for the Plainfield Public School District in 2012.

“By allowing students to participate in this exciting opportunity we hope to provide them with invaluable exposure to life changing experiences”, stated Board of Education Superintendent Anna Belin-Pyles.   “Many of our students have never had the chance to ever travel outside of the state and by supporting them in this effort we will provide encouragement to set higher goals in life ” Pyles continued.  Alrick Brown who graduated from Plainfield High School and went on to achieve Masters Degrees from Rutgers and NYU said ” If we can show the kids a pathway to success and personalize the ‘can do‘ mentality, the likelihood that they will succeed later in life is more possible.”  Brown also stated that ” much of my success can be attributed to having mentors and being able to follow their examples.  I actively seek out mentors who will be able to show me the right direction and help me to formulate my success plan and avoid costly mistakes.”

Scheduled to arrive in Salt Lake City on January 22nd, the group will be escorted by Plainfield Public Schools Youth Outreach Coordinator, Ms. Lesli Price and the project will be supervised by Chairman of the Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board, Lamar David Mackson, who is also a film and television producer. ” As a young man in the business, I relied heavily on my internship experiences with PCTV to develop confidence and skill which led me to higher plateaus.  The people I met and the accomplishments I achieved pushed me to want to succeed and do more and I believe that we can provide the same for a new generation of kids” added Mr. Mackson. “Kids often succumb to the pressures of the street because of lack of guidance and alternatives to that lifestyle.  We are showing kids the right way to believe in themselves and to develop the courage, confidence and knowledge to go after their dreams whether it be in communication-based careers or traditional employment tracks” Mackson further stated.

Kinyarwanda’s world premiere will take place on January 24,2010 in Park City, Utah at the Egyptian Theater at 9 p.m.  For more information on Alrick Brown visit http://www.alricksporch.com or http://www.kinyarwandamovie.com or the Facebook page by typing in Kinyarwanda Movie.  For more information on the Plainfield Cable Television Advisory Board and its programs, please visit http://www.pctvab.wordpress.com.  To learn more about the 2011 Sundance Film Festival visit http http://www.sundance.org/festival .
